Toile
Aluminum, lacquered, neon 50 x 45 x 245 cm, 2023

Toile, installed in the changing rooms of Coquillade Resort in Provence, France, plays with the concept of a dressing room and its 18th-century origins.

Room divisions made of cloth – ‘toile’– often indicated social standing and became a motif in art associated with seduction, the disguise of erotic intrigue and voyeurism.

The soft curves, which arouse curiosity about whether anyone is hidden in the confines of the curtain, are deceptive as they are made of a hard material – aluminum. The neon railing casts a rosy, queer glow, creating an illusion of lightness and an otherworldly sense of floating.
