PROPELLER – Animated Architecture
Photographic filters, steel ropes, 52 x 4 m, 2015

PROPELLER is redefining animation and expanding its scope.

Propeller project is a large-scale kinetic curtain for the north facade of the Royal College of Art campus in South Kensington. The 52 meters long and 4 meters high installation responds to the natural elements.

The project explores the principles of animation such as its affective influence on the viewers’ emotions through movement, colour and layered meanings.

The colour palette is carefully developed from chromatic studies of Kensington area, gently blending into surroundings. The ever-changing ripple of colours reflects the blurring boundaries between disciplines – evoking the ideals of Albertopolis – the cultural and scientific hub of London.

The project reaches different audiences, expanding the scope of animation, opening it to the world of architecture and engineering. It also focuses on creating a network of specialists involved in the project, cross-pollinating discussions that can bring innovation across the fields.

Propeller responds to the natural elements, visualizing the beauty and power of wind. The next step for Propeller is to be developed into a sustainable and beautiful wind energy harvesting facility.
